At Container of Dreams our mission is to address the challenge of supplying truly affordable housing to the disadvantaged. Our emphasis will be on providing housing to Women. It has been proven that women are the most disadvantaged in our society regarding home ownership.
Housing affordability has reached crisis point in Australia and some creative and innovative solutions are urgently required to remedy this situation. Home ownership is an important means for people to achieve financial and social wellbeing and there are wide ranging implications for our communities - not least of which is the creation and dispersal of wealth achieved through home ownership.
The Sistahood project will offer an alternative pathway to property ownership to benefit currently marginalised women in Australian society. The Great Australian Dream of owning our own home is something we have all been conditioned to aspire to, but with Australian housing now among the most expensive in the world and job security declining this ambition is disintegrating. Many people today can’t look forward to owning a home and some have just given up on ever buying. Home ownership is an important means for people to achieve financial and social wellbeing. Women in particular are missing out on home ownership.
New research has shown that older women are a hidden element of the homeless population and prefer not to ask for assistance until their situation becomes dire. Interrupted or low-paid employment, unpaid domestic duties and divorce are some of the factors that have left women economically disadvantaged.
Recent studies have indicated that women have a very clear ideas about what sort of housing would suit them as they age and they said stability and security of tenure were priorities. The Container of Dreams pilot community proposes to address this by supplying homes to people in need with priority given to single older women.
The Sistahood project will pilot an innovative ownership model. Stay tuned for details...
We are currently establishing a workshop on the Far North Coast of NSW. Once set-up we will begin the process of choosing participants in The Sistahood Project.
