This is an exciting project, which is currently on the drawing board at the Container of Dreams Thinktank, to build an Artists' Colony, where creative practitioners can live and interact with one another, right here on the Far North Coast of NSW.
Artist's are among the lowest paid professions in Australia with the average artist only earning approximately $25K per year*. As a result, many Artist's miss out on economic security and opportunities for home ownership.
Our Artist Colony project aims to employ techniques of Incremental Housing in it's design. Incremental housing is a step-by-step process, where the owners control the expansion of their housing based on their needs and resources. Incremental housing is an affordable way to rapidly build using only minimum housing needs, but to integrate into the design the opportunity to expand and modify as people's finances and resources improve.
Our Artists Colony is designed to allow for easy extension, either single-story or double-height, with allowances made in the building stages to facilitate future processes.
There is a great history of successful Artist Colonies across the globe, especially in Europe. Here's some of our faves;
